Emerging technologies have transformed how individuals acquire knowledge and e-learning has revolutionised the education sector, forcing academics to re-think the education system and techniques of imparting knowledge and While technology empowers people and promotes creativity, for both lecturers and students, challenges persist. Lecturers may be resistant to change or experience difficulties in adapting to new teaching approaches. As expounded by the Constructivist Theory, the student is an active participant in learning and the lecturer facilitates the learning process. Students in an e-learning environment need to master the course’s subject material and have the necessary technical skills. However, those lacking training or technical proficiency may not fully capitalize or realise the benefits of e-learning. The aim of this article is to investigate the challenges experienced in the use of e-learning technologies for teaching and learning in higher education institutions with specific reference to universities of technology (UOTs). The empirical study involved lecturer and student surveys at a selected UOT. The findings show that inadequate access to necessary devices, data, infrastructure, adequate technological resources and development strategies hinder successful e-pedagogy. The study recommends intervention strategies to overcome challenges and to ensure effective teaching and learning with technology.
